Windows used to have a fairly simple hardware suspend command called “standby”. However, this operation took a while to execute (both entering and exiting standby) and it was somewhat unreliable when performed repeatedly, on certain hardware or with certain applications running. Sleep is meant to alleviate these problems by just serializing the current state into memory and then shutting down all devices other than the RAM. With the OS state simmering in memory like that, entering and exiting sleep is nearly instantaneous....

The latter is unfortunately something that no browser addon can prevent. The former, however, is very easily managed. Why Is FLoC Hated? FLoC was initially intended to replace cookies, but it was far from beloved by internet users. It was designed to group users together based on browsing history, and advertisers would be able to see the behaviors that people in a cohort share without seeing the individuals. To do this, you need to be assigned an identifier before assigning you to a group, which could mean that someone looking to track you already have an easier path than they did previously....

To illustrate the problem, you try and select a number of files by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking on each one… and then suddenly you’ve got a ton of copies of all your files. This gets even more annoying in a large directory, because now you’ve got to remove the copies. The reason this happens is because you moved your mouse more than 4 pixels while clicking down on a file, so Windows assumes you’ve dragged the files and want to copy them, and is happy to litter your folder with duplicates....

With the PuTTY Connection Manager you can not only use tabs, but also wrap PuTTY in a slick interface. The underlying client is still the same putty.exe that you are used to… in fact the application doesn’t even come bundled with it. The first time you launch the application you’ll be asked to enter the location to your copy of PuTTY. And finally, a tabbed version of PuTTY! The connection manager can be docked to the side by using the little pushpin button....

If you insert dates or times in your Google Sheet, you aren’t stuck with the default date formats. You can use the word for a month instead of a number or add seconds to the time by creating custom formats. You might have a spreadsheet you’re presenting and want a more attractive date format using complete words for months or days rather than numbers or abbreviations. Or maybe you include times in your sheet and need it detailed to the millisecond....

Live captions are useful for video calls so that you can see what’s being said in addition to hearing it. Basically subtitles, you can enable live captions in Google Meet, turn them off if needed, and change the language. If you’re having difficulty hearing what participants are saying, live captions can ensure you don’t miss a thing during your Google Meet video call. You can set a preferred language, but note that the speaker must be speaking that language for the feature to work; this is not a live translate tool....
